Though the word itself didn’t enter the English language until the late 14th century, the practice has always existed. The root “commensal” comes from the Latin prefix “com” meaning “with, together” and the Latin adjective “mensalis” meaning “of the table.” But the practice and spirit of commensality goes beyond sharing a table. It is more than just a meal. It is a social act, not a biological need. It emphasizes connection, community and hospitality. It can build trust and strengthen relationships amongst family, friends, and strangers alike. It can foster opportunities to share knowledge. It can create support systems through networking. The positive effects that have come from engaging in commensality is noteworthy. Over the course of history, its practice has led to covenants being made, celebrations observed, business deals secured, and traditions established. Sharing a common table is a powerful tool.
