Bread Pudding That Will Leave You Speechless

Located on Clapboard Creek in Jacksonville, about 10 miles from the beaches of Huguenot Memorial Park and Little Talbot Island State Park, is a laid-back restaurant that serves fresh local seafood and a variety of other casual dining favorites. Palms Fish Camp is an “Old Florida Cracker” style fish camp that includes indoor and outdoor dining. With a public boat ramp on the property and floating dock, boaters have a great opportunity to tie up for lunch or dinner. The restaurant is small, so seating is limited, especially the inside dining. Covered and uncovered options are available on their outside deck, including their bar area. On weekends, they host live entertainment which can get kind of loud sometimes, so keep that in mind when finding a seat outside. Palms Fish Camp buys their seafood straight from local fisherman and run their own commercial boats. Full disclosure, I frequent this restaurant as often as I can. Why? Hands down, they have the best bread pudding I have ever tasted to date. If you checked out my post on McGuire’s Irish Pub, you will remember that I said I am a bread pudding connoisseur. Every bread pudding in my future will have to go toe-to-toe with this one. It is served hot with a drizzle of bourbon sauce, topped with whipped cream, and dressed with strawberries and blueberries. Words cannot describe the party that will happen in your mouth with each and every bite. It is simply a must try! Now the bread pudding is not their only strong contender. They can prepare some of the best tasting fresh fish in town. I typically get their “Fresh Catch Special” and have it prepared grilled, blackened, or fried. On my most recent visit for lunch, they had triggerfish. Also, one of my favorites. I opted to have it fried. The breading was light, evenly distributed, well-seasoned and fried golden brown. In the past, I have had it grilled. While it tasted great as expected, I believe I favor this particular fish grilled over fried. It was served with their popular coconut rice, mixed veggies, and hush puppies. The coconut rice is simple but delightful with its lightly aromatic scent of coconut and mild sweet flavor. The mixed veggies consisted of sauteed zucchini, yellow squash, peppers, and onions. Another simple dish, but great compliment to the fish. To conclude my meal, of course, I had the bread pudding. For the first time in years, they served it that day without the whipped cream and berries. I guess they ran out. But no worries, the bourbon sauce is the star of the show, and it still tasted fantastic!! If you are looking for a fine dining establishment, this is not the place for you. But if you are looking for consistently well-prepared food with a laid-back vibe, Palms Fish Camp fits that bill. Their menu also includes a variety of salads, pizzas, burgers, and sandwiches, if seafood is not your thing.
