A Taste of Outdoor Sarasota

In addition to being known for its artistic community, Sarasota is home to an extensive network of parks, preserves, and trails. It has far more than the average city its size. Whether you like to walk, hike, bike or run, there is anything from waterfront paths, long-distance paved routes, nature trails, and boardwalks to choose from. If you prefer to spend your time on the water, there are many access points to launch a kayak or take a guided tour exploring the mangrove preserves around Sarasota Bay. Maybe hitting the beach is more your speed when it comes to enjoying the great outdoors, then Lido Key is the place to be. Today, I am going to highlight an amazing waterfront park and share with you my recommendation for where to enjoy a well-rounded experience at Lido Key Beach.

Let’s start with the waterfront park that was a total surprise and turned out to be an absolute morning gem. Bayfront Park is located in the heart of downtown Sarasota. It is part of the iconic waterfront stretch that includes Marina Jacks, and hosts the infamous statue, “Unconditional Surrender.” Looking at it from the parking lot, it didn’t seem like much. But from the moment I walked under the archway onto the winding path, I began to realize I entered a place that I was not quite expecting. It was first thing in the morning, when the sun was still low and the Frappe I was indulging was just beginning to awaken my senses. Suddenly, my eyes beheld a park that perfectly blends the calming greenery of nature with the blues and views of coastal therapy. The park sits on its own peninsula and has a walkway that takes you around the outer edge and through points of interest. Taking the outer path allows you to absorb the beauty of Sarasota Bay with a glimpse of Bird Key, Ringling Bridge, and a wide range of boats at mooring and docked at the marina. There were benches and swings along the path, beckoning you to stop and enjoy your surroundings. Large beautiful trees provided sufficient shade from direct sunlight and offered a softer side of nature. The grounds were shockingly immaculate, as if the park was brand new. At the tip of the peninsula was a round dolphin fountain that added just another special touch to the intimate waterfront experience. In the quietness of the morning, the spectacular views were so soothing, they could easily drop your blood pressure a point or two. For such a small park, it certainly had a wide range of amenities. There are multiple play areas for children, including a splash pad. There are areas to fish and a place to launch a kayak or canoe. There is a pavilion, picnic benches, an on-site restaurant, and public restrooms. Of course, it wouldn’t be a true Sarasota park without a few art sculptures on display. Bayfront Park is also pet friendly. Parking and admission is free and the experience priceless. If you enjoy a leisurely stroll with coastal vibes, Bayfront Park should be on your shortlist, especially in the stillness of an early morning.

Now for all you beach lovers, I discovered Lido Key offers a diverse variety of beach experiences. We took a good part of a day to explore its many sides. To the north, there is City Island, a bay side park featuring an area to launch kayaks, paddleboards, windsurf, sail or other small watercraft. There was noticeable hurricane damage in the dock area and waterfront, but it didn’t seem to stop visitors and locals alike from taking pleasure in the bay. While there was easy access to shallow waters, this area would not be suitable for your typical beach activities, except fishing. Located close by was Ken Thompson Park, which is also a good option for shoreline fishing, but from a dry concrete barrier wall. It, too, experienced some hurricane damage to the fishing piers and watercraft launch docks. Making your way south towards North Lido Beach and Central Lido Beach brings you to the more traditional Florida beach areas with long and wide sandy beaches, lifeguard stands, and lots of people. But for those of you like me, who prefer a more low-key relaxed beach experience, then South Lido Beach is where it’s at. As you make your way through the entrance, you will find a children’s playground and a large picnic area with grills. This provides more entertainment and added fun for the children and the family grill-master. For added convenience, there is a public bathroom facility with an outdoor showering area. South Lido Beach encompasses almost the entire southern side of the key. On the southwest corner is the continuation of the beautiful white sandy beach as found at North and Central Lido Beach that is perfect for swimming and sunbathing. On the southernmost tip and southeastern side, you can still find nice areas for swimming or wading in the water, but the further north you travel, it becomes more ideal for fishing in the Big Sarasota Pass. Now here’s where it gets really interesting. Hidden behind the treeline on the southeastern side of South Lido Beach is the Ted Sperling Park. It is a county park that features kayak trails through mangrove tunnels and bayous. There are also walking trails, including one that skirts the coastline that leads you to mangrove and bayou lookout points. Talk about the unexpected. From the beach-goer to the nature trail hiker to the watercraft lover, this beach accommodates many passions to a coastal day on the water. On our visit, we got to enjoy wading in the clear waters, taking a long walk north along the coastline, spotting the latest fisherman’s catch and discovering wildlife and sea creatures along the way. Heading back, we took the park’s nature trail to stop at the multiple mangrove and bayou overlook spots. It was truly a unique and special experience that I would highly recommend to any outdoor, nature or coastal lover.
