Coastal Cove Therapy

Apollo Beach is a small, but growing community. Ironically, it is not a beach community, at least in the sense of what you think of in regards to a Florida beach. While there is a few points of sandy beach access to Tampa Bay, Apollo Beach is predominantly known as a residential canal waterfront community. Nestled in the midst, is a newly discovered restaurant fave for me. Finn’s Dockside Bar & Grill checks off most of my boxes when it comes to a dining establishment with great food and an amazing atmosphere. Featuring mostly seafood and chicken dishes, you can find traditional waterfront menu items, such as the Surfside Salmon, to unexpected fare, like the Dockside Meatloaf. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating available. Weather permitting, I highly recommend taking advantage of the outdoor covered seating that allows you to take in the expansive view of the beautiful cove, waterfront homes, and nearby marina, while being sheltered from the harsh Florida sun during the day. We visited on a picture perfect day in January with temps in the 70s, full sunshine, and gentle breezes. It was mid-week lunch time and there was a light crowd, so service was on point and the vibe was peaceful and relaxing. I immediately felt my stress melt away and shift into vacation mode as the setting was undeniably soothing. For those of you who prefer a more livelier environment, Finn’s does host live music most evenings and there is Happy Hour during weekday afternoons. Our meal began with the Local Fish Spread as our appetizer. Comprised mainly of Mahi Mahi, the spread was so fresh and creamy, but still had a texture that elevated the dish to an almost entree status. It was accompanied by a Pineapple Pico and Lance Crackers. The tropical flavors of the pico, along with the sweetness of the crackers, complimented the savoriness of the fish spread spectacularly. I would dare to say that it was the best fish spread I have ever tasted to date. For my entree, I went with the Grilled Caesar Salad for a fancier take on a traditional Caesar. Baby romaine halves were lightly seared with a dash of Montreal seasoning. It was dressed with Asiago Caesar, Parmesan shavings and topped with a crispy Asiago tuile. The grilled romaine maintained a firm crunch and was loaded with delectable salty flavors from the dressing to the thin Parmesan crisp. My beloved had a grilled Grouper fillet served with sweet coconut rice and a tropical pineapple slaw. The Grouper was perfectly seasoned with a light smokiness and a moist flaky texture. The coconut flavor shined through the rice and the pineapple was subtle in the slaw. With a stunning view of calm bay waters, luxurious boats, and food that did not disappoint, Finn’s is my top pick for outstanding food and great ambiance in Apollo Beach, Florida. If you are looking for coastal therapy that tantalizes the eyes, stimulates the taste buds and potentially reduces cortisol, this diner's delight fits the bill.
